Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Oral traditions, including stories, proverbs, songs, and rituals, form a critical part of the cultural heritage in Nigeria, especially in communities like Pankshin Local Government Area (LGA) in Plateau State. These oral traditions are not just a means of communication but also serve as vessels for preserving history, customs, and indigenous knowledge. However, with modernization and globalization, many of these traditions are at risk of being lost. Photography, often considered a visual form of documentation, can complement oral traditions by capturing and preserving the essence of these cultural expressions. Through photographic documentation, the rich history, rituals, and customs of the Pankshin people can be preserved for future generations. This study aims to explore how photography can be used to document oral traditions, highlighting its significance in cultural preservation and promotion.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Oral traditions in Pankshin, as in many other parts of Nigeria, face the risk of erosion due to the increasing influence of modern communication technologies and cultural shifts. The decline in oral tradition transmission is compounded by the limited resources available for preserving such heritage. While photography has been used in other areas of cultural documentation, its potential to capture oral traditions—through images of performances, storytellers, and rituals—has not been fully explored. This study aims to investigate the influence of photography in documenting oral traditions in Pankshin LGA and how it contributes to cultural preservation efforts.

  1. How does photography contribute to documenting oral traditions in Pankshin LGA?
  2. What is the impact of photographic documentation on the preservation of oral traditions in the region?
  3. How can photography be used to raise awareness and promote the value of oral traditions in Pankshin?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Photography contributes significantly to the documentation and preservation of oral traditions in Pankshin LGA.
  2. Photographic documentation helps in maintaining the cultural relevance and continuity of oral traditions.
  3. Photography increases awareness and appreciation of oral traditions among younger generations in Pankshin LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it explores the role of photography in documenting oral traditions and contributing to the preservation of indigenous knowledge. By highlighting the connection between photography and oral traditions, the study presents photography as a valuable tool in cultural preservation, ensuring that traditions in Pankshin LGA are maintained for future generations.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on the role of photography in documenting oral traditions in Pankshin LGA, Plateau State. The research is specifically concerned with photography as a medium for documenting oral traditions and does not include other forms of documentation such as audio recordings or written texts.
